Who makes a book collectible?

I’ve had an interesting thing occur. But it’s probably only interesting to me and won’t effect much of anything in terms of sales or my career. But it makes me scratch my head just the same.

I’m collectible.

Not exactly me, you understand. One of the anthologies I’m in, The Hard Stuff is in its fourth printing, which is really great, so thanks to all the readers who purchased!

I was skipping around on the ‘net and noticed that there were a couple of books available for sale as collectibles. HMMMM. What could this mean, I wondered, then clicked over to see that indeed, a couple of first editions are now for sale. One of them has even been autographed by Sunny.

These first editions are priced at somewhere close to the original cover price. Very cool all around.
Makes me wonder how much people would charge for those few that have all three autographs. In the summer of 2006, Karin, Sunny and I were all at the RWA Conference Literary book signing and several people made certain to collect all our signatures. (I say several but in the interest of accuracy I should say four or five)

I don’t think we’ve all been at the same book signing with first edition copies available since then. So, wow.

Makes me think that maybe those few books may actually be worth, oh, say as much as $5.00 above original price, or maybe that’s a stretch. Either way, it feels a little weird to be included in a “collectible”. I think it would be akin to earning a lifetime achievement award at thirty-five.

And Hallelujah! I heading into the last days of work on BREATHLESS, my next Aphrodisia. As soon as I have a release date for the “first edition”, I’ll let you know.

Wow, uh, congrats, I think! ;) How funny! Although I do loved books autographed by the authors, I don’t know that I think of collecting them that way! I’m really more about the story ;) Yay for you for being nearly done with Breathless!

Thanks Fedora…it’s really a weird thing to wrap my head around. I mean, wouldn’t you like to keep autographed books? I do! An autograph makes them special to me and reminds me of where I was when I got the autograph, and if I had a conversation with the author or whatever…

And thanks on BREATHLESS. I’m having a blast writing it.

 I had to get my copy of THE HARD STUFF out and look, but it’s only signed by Karin. Well, DAYUM! Guess I can’t retire yet… I have quite a few autographed books, and they’re always on my keeper shelves. My shelves, of course, have to keep expanding because I rarely part with a book, and I love to reread them. Congrats on getting close to finishing Breathless–I’m getting ready to start work on Wolf Tales IX.

    Hi Bonnie!
You know, its so hard for me to let go of books now than ever! Of course, a favorite author remains keepers so I don’t give up those!, and those with series (especially if the series isn’t done because I’m always going back to books to check out something to recall, etc. I don’t know what printing my books are (have no idea how to figure that out) but for me, its more of a personal need for the keepers than rather as collectibles. But I know some first editions go for alot. Too huge congrats on the 4th printing of THE HARD STUFF.

Thanks everyone….since I looked at The Hard Stuff and discovered this “collectible” tag I figured I should check on Pure Sex, because that’s had a second printing.

While it’s not listed as a collectible, there *is* a listing that says it’s a first edition.

Caffey…you can take a peek at the copyright page and if you see the run of 10 numbers go to 1 then you’ll know it’s a first edition. If it goes to 2, it’s a 2nd printing. For some reason the numbers drop off.

But, I’m thinking you may very well be one of the few who got all 3 signatures at the conference…if not, next time I see you, bring your book along! If the other authors are there, too…I’ll make sure we all sign for you.

    Because you’re you, that’s why.

    Bonnie

Oh I had no idea on how to figure it out! I’m going to pull out my books of yours and others to check which editions I have!! Thanks Bonnie! I haven’t had the joy to meet you yet Bonnie, but I hope that changes! I do have to meet you and have you sign all yours!
