Dominic, The Lords of Satyr
I’m finishing up my revisions on Dane, The Lords of Satyr, my fifth novel, so I’ll be short and sweet. I missed Lora Leigh’s RAW this past weekend because my husband has a bad case of flu. I urge you to all to be diligent in washing your hands this fall and winter. My husband’s doc said hand-washing is a big help in preventing flu. I read that a good rule of thumb for how long to wash, is to sing the Happy Birthday song twice as you wash (in your head so people don’t think you’re eccentric.) And I hope to be invited to RAW 2010 because I was really sad to miss meeting Lora Leigh and Lorie O’Clare and many other authors and readers who were able to attend this great event in West Virginia.
I WILL make it to Moonlight and Magnolias in Atlanta October 2-4 and to the Seattle area GSRWA conference on October 9-11. I hope you’ll come by and say hello if you see me running around or at the booksignings. Authors love to yak, and I’m no exception. We’re sequestered in our little caves writing all the time, so when you let us out . . . woo hoo! I’m ready for some wine and conversation. Don’t be shy about meeting and greeting any author. Seriously. Sometimes people are shy about it and authors wind up feeling like wallflowers. We want to meet you and we love chatting about books and what you like to read. Whatever. As long as you don’t ask us to write a novel on the spot, we’re happy. ![]()
Kensington has been generous in giving me some extra books recently, so I have a copy of Nicholas, The Lords of Satyr to give away. I’ll choose a winner from among commenters October 6th. I know that’s a little over a week away! Sorry about that. I may be remiss in replying to comments till then too. A busy week ahead. So tell me, what ‘s the one question you’d ask me (or authors in general) if you met me/us about books and writing?
xoxo

Morning Elizabeth,
where did you get the idea from for the Satyr books? What inspired you?
Have a great time in Atlanta and Seattle.
Too bad I will be in Atlanta only on Wednesday
by Danny · September 28th, 2009 at 5:03 amI’m sorry your husband’s been ill–and really sorry you missed RAW! I had hoped to attend, but just couldn’t swing it with the crazy schedule. Have fun at the other cons–I’m really jealous that you’re going to the one in Seattle! That’s one I hope to get to one of these days. Congrats on finishing Dane, and no need to add me to the contest. I already have all your books!
by Kate Douglas · September 28th, 2009 at 10:12 amI’ve always had a hard time say goodbye to characters I’ve become attached to when a book ends. Often they stay with me for a period of time after the book has been put away. That’s why I like book series, I get to see glimpses of my favorite characters.
A question I’ve always wanted to know is do you as an author revisit the characters in your head with new stories or even write mini stories on paper that never get shown to anyone else?
Have fun with the events in Atlanta and Seattle!
by Sue A. · September 28th, 2009 at 12:29 pmI am so sorry that he has been sick! There is nothing fun about having anyone in the family! I hope he gets to feeling better and better!!
I am wondering when you write a series, do you have an idea how many you are going to write? Do you know how it will all end, or do you just write until it feels like you have covered it all and know it is time to be done?
Thanks so much!

What’s the best thing writing has done for you and your life?
Deidre
by Deidre · September 28th, 2009 at 9:24 pmSorry to hear about your husband. Hopefully he will fully recover. I am working for my dad with his delivery company and right now I have over 200 fluvirin vaccines sitting my fridge for different flu clinics in our area. It is a really good idea for everyone.
Washing your hands is a great idea as well. And when you have little ones its even better. Thankfully it hasn’t gone around our daycare yet. When I was working at the daycare, it was a big thing to teach the kids to wash their hands. Its harder though when their parents don’t wash their hands and the kids see that. They think that they its not fair. Oh well. Gotta teach them sometime.
I would love to win one of your books from this collection. I have been wanting to get them, just haven’t had the time and money.
by Gina · September 29th, 2009 at 11:28 amHi Elizabeth,
Sorry to hear about your husband and that you missed out on RAW. I have heard this flu season is going to be a bad one. My husband works for a large bank and they have gone to great lengths of trying to prevent contamination by giving each employee a bottle of antibacterial gel. We’re talking 13 floors!!
My question(s)– do you read books while traveling to and from your destination? Do you pack several or have a ereader? Do you reread any of your books?
Would love a chance to win NICHOLAS. Throwing my name in the hat.
by Armenia · September 29th, 2009 at 1:02 pmSorry to hear about your husband, Elizabeth!
by Anya Howard · September 29th, 2009 at 1:17 pmI’m so sorry your husband’s been under the weather–hope he’s back on his feet and that you’ve stayed healthy!
As for questions, I always enjoy learning what books/authors inspire you or are keepers. It’s always fun to peek on other people’s shelves
Take care!
by Fedora · October 1st, 2009 at 4:47 pmI will stop and say hi when you are in Bellevue. I put this signing on my calendar 4 months ago. I am always interested in knowing what inspired a story. Do you typically “know” how long it will take to write a book?
by Lindsey Ekland · October 2nd, 2009 at 3:59 amHi Danny!
I got the idea for the satyr novels from my studies of Greco-Roman mythology. Satyrs are the carnal followers of the wine god Bacchus, so I thought this was a good subject to update, give a little paranormal spin, and set in 1800s Italy. It has been fun.
Kate,
Your schedule is crazy! I can’t wait for your Demonfire book to come out in March. I’m really looking forward to Seattle ECRW. I missed RAW and Atlanta due to my husband being sick, but he’s doing much better and will be back at school next week. So I’ll be in Seattle. Yahoo!
Hi Sue,
I do revisit characters. It sounds sappy, but I do care about them even after I finish writing their novels. They don’t exactly seem real, but they seem important to me because I connected to them emotionally. I want them to be happy and I think of how they might be doing now and then.
Hi Amy,
I’ve been writing the Lords of Satyr novels in chunks. The first 3 books were set in 1823 Tuscany and concerned three brothers. Then Dominic was a stand-alone in 1850. The 3 new books are set in 1880s Rome and this trilogy begins with Dane, The Lords of Satyr. Which is with my editor! Yay—finished! Thanks for this great question.
Hi Deidre,
by Elizabeth Amber · October 7th, 2009 at 7:03 pmGood one! It has allowed me to ‘meet’ characters and care about them and decide how their lives and loves will unfold. Before I began writing, I read lots of romance novels and sometimes imagined other storylines for characters in other authors’ books. It has been fun to really develop my own stories.
Gina!
I hope your daycare gets through this season unscathed. Flu in kids and husbands is hard to deal with! My husband’s a strong guy, and it kind of shook me to see him so sick. I’m glad to say he’s doing well now though.
Hey Armenia,
That’s great that the bank is taking steps to prevent flu thought. Really great.
I don’t have an ereader of any kind yet. I’d love to get one, but can never decide which platform to buy. My husband checked out a kindle from his school library and I loved it. Unfortunately, we had to give it back. Waaaah. Yes, I do reread my own books, mostly to help me write the new ones. To remember what I’ve said about characters in one book, so I don’t contradict myself when writing about them in another book.
Thank you, Anya!
Hi Fedora,
My shelves are groaning. I guess I do need an ereader. Sherrilyn Kenyon was at M&M in Atlanta and I read several of her novels in anticipation of going to the conference. She’s an amazing author!
Hi Lindsey,
) Part of the fun of writing for me is getting a book just the way I want it, or as close to what I want as I’m capable of as a writer. I’m delighted you’ll be in Bellevue. I LOVE the Pacific NW. Hope to see you there! xoxo
by Elizabeth Amber · October 7th, 2009 at 7:04 pmI figure out as much as I can about the plot, characters, and motivation before I get started. I always think writing will take less time than it does.
Thank you to everyone for the great, though-provoking questions. My bf Eva chose the winner . . .
Congratulations Gina!! You won Nicholas! Email me at elizabethamber1 at aol dot com with your snail mail when you get a chance.
