Should characters come with baggage?

We all know the old saying that everyone comes into a relationship with all the baggage from their past. Every disappointment, every broken relationship, every childhood trauma or even perceived slights mix into our personalities to color the way we see the world. And we’ve all had the experience of having our “baggage” not play nice with a friend or partners’, right? Talk about conflict!!

So shouldn’t the same be true for characters in our favorite books?

Characters with fully fleshed pasts feel more real, more three dimensional…more like someone we could meet in real life if we met them outside the pages of a book.

So how do authors go about creating a full cast of people with a lifetime of experiences? I’m sure there are as many ways as there are authors, so I can only speak to my personal methods. My favorite way to flesh out my characters is to talk to them about their “baggage”…i.e. their past. When characters pop into my head and are persistent enough for me to include them in an upcoming story – that’s the time I sit down and get inside their head. I do my best to “become” that character and write a character sketch in first person from their birth (or creation in the case of some of my paranormal characters) to present. It may sound silly, but you’d be surprised what flows out onto the page when the characters start talking. Within those few pages an author can learn what childhood/teenage or even adult happenings still affect that character’s behavior today…and in author speak that equals MOTIVATION! :)

And if you’ve written at all, you know motivation is the fuel that moves your characters through the timeline of the book. No motivation, no movement from the characters – or at least not believable movement or actions. We’ve all seen movies or read books where we yell “they wouldn’t really do that!” That means the magical “M” (motivation) just wasn’t there in that instance. And everyone loves the “M” from editors and agents to readers – and especially us authors because it makes the book that much easier to write!

In my newest book, Seducing the Succubus, I brought together two main characters with plenty of past to spare!

Jezebeth is one of four succubi sisters in Hell’s version of the Witness Protection Program because the sisters helped Lilith, the Queen of the Succubi and Incubi trap a powerful demon who was actually behind all the deaths during the Black Plague during the 1340’s. The four sisters have been scattered across the world for the past seven hundred years, but now the demon is back and someone is selling out their locations to the demon who has had centuries to plan his revenge.

Noah Halston, a horror writer, owes Lilith, the Succubus Queen, big. Several years earlier while researching demons and possession for a book, he’d unwittingly summoned Lilith. The incantation he’d stumbled on traded one night of ecstasy with Lilith for an eternity of damnation and torture. But hey–Noah never actually thought it would work! Even though Lilith is the ultimate temptation, Noah reluctantly turns down her advances, which intrigues Lilith. She offers him a different deal instead–she’d forget the summoning if he would owe her a single favor at the time of her choosing. Relieved and still not sure he wasn’t hallucinating, Noah agreed and they seal the pact in blood. Noah had almost allowed himself to forget the pact, until an imp had shown up on his doorstep two days earlier telling him it was time to pay up.

As you can imagine each character brings their unique baggage and perception to the dangers and even the temptations that they have to brave along the way…

I hope you enjoy this sneak peek at Seducing the Succubus, the first book in the Sisters of Darkness Series from Berkley Sensations!

“Dinner time, gentlemen,” Jezebeth said to herself as she raked her gaze over the many men crowding into the darkened club.

The heavy beat of hip-hop music thumped through the soles of her knee-high lace-up boots and made her heart beat faster as anticipation curled deep inside her belly.

A long mahogany bar ran the length of the back wall, and dozens of men crowded around jostling for their turn to order a drink. In the middle of the room scantily clad women gyrated on four raised platforms while colored laser lights panned over the audience in regular intervals, briefly illuminating the smoky atmosphere. Not that Jez needed the light. One of the perks of being a succubus was being able to see in the dark–not to mention sense and smell the sustenance-giving potential of those beings around her.

Her searching gaze fell on a large human male sitting at a back table with broad shoulders and just the right amount of muscle. A glowing aura of nearly white energy surrounded him like a pulsing mist, and Jez’s skin ached with longing–the succubus equivalent of a stomach growl. The size and general health of the man’s aura told her not only that he’d feed her well but that taking his energy and tempting him toward good or evil would also give her great brownie points with her boss, Lilith, the succubus queen. Especially since Jez was behind quota this month–again.

Jez concentrated on the man and a slow warm tingling flowed through her as her body shifted to become whatever form the man most desired.

She glanced down to see her now-overgenerous breasts nearly spilling out over a tight-laced bloodred corset, her skin milk-pale and her body fully curved. She wore a tight black miniskirt and short black ankle boots that displayed a winding rose tattoo snaking up her right leg to disappear under her skirt.

This body was shorter than she was used to, and she had to crane her neck and stand on her tiptoes to keep the man in her line of sight over the tightly packed crowd.

Jez reached up and tried to fluff out her hair, surprised to find it short and spiky instead of long and flowing. She shrugged as amusement spilled through her. The preferences of men were wide and varied, and as long as they provided her with what she needed, she didn’t care what form she had to take to get it.

Well–that was almost true.

There had been forms she’d outright refused to remain in.

She shuddered in memory of some of the more bizarre bodies men had desired her to take and wrangled her thoughts back to the situation at hand–dinner.

Jez started forward, weaving her way through the crowd, her gaze fixed on her target where he sipped his drink and watched the dancer on the nearest platform as she spun expertly around the golden pole using only her muscular thighs.

As Jez neared, the man turned his head, and she could tell the exact moment he became aware of her. His movements stilled and his gaze did a slow and very thorough exploration of her from head to toe and then back again. When he was finished, his lips parted in surprise and the bulge just behind the fly of his jeans grew larger in response.

Jez smiled at him from under her lashes and wet her bottom lip with her tongue, suppressing a small giggle as she tasted strawberry-flavored lip gloss.

His blue gaze burned into hers for a long moment before Jez stepped close and straddled him, making her already short skirt ride up high around her thighs. She sat on his lap and pressed close against his erection. The sensation of rough denim against the sensitive skin of her bare pussy was exquisite. She rubbed herself against him and laid her hand over his chest, noting how his heartbeat thumped a strong pulse under her palm and the energy surrounding him surged higher, tingling against her skin in tiny static electric shocks.

To her surprise, he didn’t push her away or show any signs of protest. For someone with such a clean aura, she’d expected a bit of a challenge, but she definitely wasn’t going to complain.

She leaned in close to his ear and whispered, “Buy me a drink?”

His strong hand settled against her lower back, the heat from his skin burning through the corset and making her pussy throb in anticipation of what was to come. She pulled back slowly, allowing her breath to feather against the side of his neck until she could look into his eyes.

“Only a drink?” he asked with mischief and lust dancing in the blue depths of his eyes.

Jez smiled and leaned forward again so her breasts pressed against his chest as she brushed her lips over his.

His lips were warm, and he growled deep in his throat and then deepened the kiss, exploring her mouth long and slow.

The tangy taste of Jack Daniel’s made her smile. That explained his lack of restraint. A few more drinks would probably make her job all that much easier.

His kisses were a bit sloppy and clumsy, but he made up for that with enthusiasm and the promise of a great energy payoff in the end. With one large hand he cupped her breast roughly, the hot possession making her gasp against his mouth.

She kissed him again, hard, and the familiar tingling and liquid warmth sensation of his life-energy siphoning into her hummed through her veins, ripping a long moan from her throat. Jez sighed against his lips as her clit hardened and slick moisture formed between her labia.

This was only an appetizer, but already her gnawing hunger receded and her skin tingled with vigor. She threaded her fingers into the man’s soft hair, capturing him close as she continued to kiss him.

Two sharp taps on her shoulder surprised her and she turned, ready to deal with a bouncer or an angry girlfriend.

Instead, she found a four-foot imp.

It was shamrock green with two tiny yellow horns poking out the top of his knotty head. His glowing red eyes reminded her of twin laser pointers, and he smiled revealing jagged yellow teeth. “Mind if I cut in for official business, Jezebeth?”

“What the hell is that?” The man stood abruptly, dumping her off his lap so she landed hard on her bare ass against the cold concrete floor.

A high-pitched squeak escaped her just before sharp pain radiated up her back from the hard landing. She turned to glare at the imp, who only smirked and shrugged.

Jez pushed to her feet, pulling the short skirt down around the tops of her thighs as she straightened and smiled up at her now-spooked dinner. “It’s okay.” She gestured toward the imp. “It’s leaving.” She took a step toward the man, but he held up a hand stop-sign fashion between them.

He shook his head and backed away from her, rubbing his eyes as if he thought he might be hallucinating. “I think I’ve had a little too much to drink if I’m seeing things already.” He took one last longing look at Jez before turning and melting into the crowd.

Jez sighed as the hip-hop song ended and a slow bluesy number started up in its place.

Since no one else in the bar was running away in horror, the imp was probably shielding his true form from all the human eyes–except the man she’d targeted. “Couldn’t this have waited another hour or so?” she said loud enough to be heard over the music.

“Lilith sent me to tell you Semiazas has escaped his prison and seeks revenge on you and your sisters.”

An icy chill of fear danced down Jez’s spine and bile threatened to inch its way up the back of her throat. She swallowed hard before she risked speaking. “How long do I have?”

The imp cocked its head to one side as if considering. “It took me several days to find you. Unknown.”

She swallowed back the fear that tried to smother her. “And my sisters?”

“Other messengers have been sent to warn each of them in turn.”

The sound of wrenching metal accompanied by an animalistic growl that prickled every hair on Jezebeth’s body grated through the air, sending patrons screaming and running in all directions. Sharp, hot anger churned inside her stomach, and she trained her narrowed gaze on the imp.

“You bastard, you led him right to me!” She reached out and grabbed the imp around the neck with both hands, lifting him off his stubby feet.

The imp kicked Jez in the stomach. Pain curled through her as the air was knocked out of her, causing her to loosen her grip on the imp as she doubled over. She rested her hands on her knees as she tried to suck in a new breath.

The imp’s smug laughter sounded from nearby. “I fulfilled my promise to Lilith, I delivered the message. And now I’ve paid a debt I owed to one of the bounty demons as well. It’s a good day all the way around.”

When Jez could finally draw a breath, the stench of fresh sewage crossed with rotting flesh filled her lungs and stung her eyes. She stumbled backward, trying to put distance between her and the demon, but by the intensity of the stink she knew it was already too late.

The sweeping laser lights showed the crowd of humans still streamed toward the exits. The bluesy music continued to play like a macabre accompaniment to the human screams, sounds of breaking wood and screeching metal.

Jez dodged around overturned tables and chairs, trying to lose herself in the crowd of stampeding humans.

As she neared the exit door, her survival instincts screamed and her gut clenched, surging adrenaline through her body as she whirled to look behind her.

A flicker of movement was all the warning she had before red-hot pain sliced through her shoulder and left arm and she found herself flying backward. Her back smacked against something hard, and her breath whooshed out for the second time in a few minutes.

She gasped against the pain, even as her brain belatedly told her she’d been slammed against the wall. A few long seconds later, she glanced up into the glowing red eyes of the bounty demon.

Lots of new covers to share :)

I know I’ve been a bad blogger on this site but I’ve been writing like a crazy person all year and I keep forgetting to do stuff that involves any extra writing LOL But the rewards of writing so much do mean that I get to share lots of cover goodness from three different books for two different publishers and three different imprints.

First up-because this is the Aphrodisia blog is Simply Forbidden which comes out in February 2011.

Isn’t it beautiful? It’s actually slightly more red/pink in person than this looks but I love it because the people actually look a little like my main characters, Lisette Delornay-Ross and Major Lord Gabriel Swanfield.
Here’s the blurb :)

With an unconventional upbringing and a reputation as a shameless flirt, Lisette Delornay-Ross is not your typical young lady of the ton. Unlike her peers she is not afraid to follow her desires. And what she desires is Major Lord Gabriel Swanfield…

Returned to England after his harrowing ordeal as a war prisoner, Gabriel has shunned society. When Lisette brazenly confronts him, he feels an overwhelming stirring of lust. He’s sure she would never entertain the illicit desires he indulges at Madame Helene’s. But when he kisses her, he discovers her thirst for pleasure and adventure matches his…

And if you can’t wait that long to get a little taste of the ‘Simply’s, watch out for my upcoming novella in the Brava anthology, Lords of Passion ‘How to seduce a wife.’ You might run into some very familiar characters :) This book is headlined by Virginia Henley and also includes the very talented Maggie Robinson. It comes out in December of this year!

Louisa March’s new husband, Nicholas, is a perfect gentleman in bed-much to her disappointment. She longs for the kind of fevered passion found in her beloved romance novels. But when she dares him to seduce her properly, she discovers that Nicholas is more than ready to meet her challenge, over and over again…

And last, but not least, if you want a break from all that hot steamy erotic lovemaking, try the second book in my paranormal historical romance series, ‘Blood of the Rose” which features, King Henry VIII, Vampires, Druids, a complicated plot and a love story. This one also comes out in February 2011.

When Rosalind Llewellyn had to join forces with her enemy, Christopher Ellis to defeat a rogue Vampire threatening Henry VIII, their alliance led to a surprising passion. Reunited after a years separation, they face a new threat that could destroy their last chance at happiness.

Christopher is delighted by the spectacular rise at court of his friends George and Anne Boleyn. But Rosalind suspects Lady Anne is up to no good-she may even be a Vampire who’s bewitched the king. Now Rosalind must fight to keep Christopher from falling under the woman’s mysterious spell. It isn’t until Anne reveals a dark secret that Christopher awakens to where the true danger lies-and he begins to play a desperate game in order to save the woman he loves…

Do you have a favorite among the three covers?

One Hot Mama

To set the record straight, not that anyone cares, I’m hetrosexual. One husband. One man for too damn long. Until I started writing erotica, the idea of getting it on with a woman never entered my mind. (All right, there was that one time when I was a summer camp counselor. Burned into my memory and memorable.)

The point is, I write h/h. There’s my comfort zone. But maybe the times are a-changing.

Lets step back a bit to earlier this summer when I was cleaning out some stuff at our family cabin. I came across an old Playboy and sat down to read the articles–yeah, right. The month’s centerfold was a female marine. A female Rambo. One kick ass broad. Muscles on muscles and a ‘come and get it’ look.

Okay, she’s not looking for me and I’m not looking for her, but she spoke to the writer in me. I love writing about women ready to take on the world even when the hero has throw ropes around her. I tore out the appropriate pages and tucked them away for future reference. (For the record, unless the creek floods, this week I’ll be finishing a contracted Aphrodisia single title due to come out who knows when)

Soon it’ll be future reference time. And for a change, until a few days ago I didn’t have an idea in me. Not to worry because I’m uploading some old material to Kindle, etc, and was looking forward to concentrating on that.

Then I received an email from an editor. Have I ever considered writing a menage shape shifter? Shape shifters, yet, love ‘em. Write ‘em. But never a menage. On the tails of my confession, the editor shot me several examples which I’ve been reading.

Okay Hot Mama aka female Marine. Get ready for a ride with a couple of hot men who aren’t always human. I’m plastering the centerfold next to my monitor, the creative juices are rolling, and maybe, just maybe I’ll become one of those male shapeshifters determined to get it on with Ms. July. (Or was it Sept?)

Speaking of shape shifters and beasts, I have two stories that fall into those categories on the stands. Do Some Guys Really Not Get It?

First, the exciting news. Men on Fire, the Aphrodisia firefighter anthology from November 2009 is September’s Red-Hot Read in Cosmopolitan magazine. How cool is that?

The novella they excerpted is Jodi Lynn Copeland’s “Playing With Fire.” Hurray, Jodi!! And hurray also that the book’s co-authors, Rachelle Chase and I, get a little free promo too, since our book cover is featured. That makes twice in Cosmo for me this year – my own Sex Drive (December 2010) was the May Red-Hot Read.

So, of course I bought the September Cosmo, and as I browsed through the articles, I found this tidbit. This man who’s 30 says he owes his seductive skills to buying “dopey romance novels” (excuse me???), ripping out the sex scenes, and memorizing them until he can recite the “tacky phrases” (double excuse me???) word for word. He says they’re like cheat sheets for getting a girl’s undies off.

On how many levels is this just plain wrong? If he thinks romance novels are dopey, then clearly he thinks romance is dopey (and who uses the word “dopey” anyhow?). Well, obviously, if his goal is getting a girl’s undies off, he doesn’t give a damn about romance, does he? This is a man I so don’t want to know!

But, seriously, would a woman fall for this? Some guy who doesn’t look at her, isn’t interested in her, doesn’t care about her, just reciting seductive phrases from a novel with his tongue firmly planted in his cheek, with the sole goal of having sex with her? I’d really like to think she’d laugh her head off and walk away from the shmuck.

On the other hand, for a man who really cares about women and wants tips on how to please them, reading romance novels is a great guide. There are insights into what women want and how they feel that are invaluable to the good guys. Hint: it’s about the romance, the genuineness, the connection, not the specific words! Yes, having a guy say something romantic can be a turn-on for a woman, but that “something romantic” has to ring true. It can’t be a sleaze-ball line delivered in a bar by a virtual stranger. She has to believe it’s personal, genuine, meaningful, and not just some “tacky phrase” he’s only saying to get her into bed.

I’ll keep writing romance novels, and when I picture men reading them, it’ll be the good guys I have in mind. As for the sleaze-balls, I hope they get exactly what they deserve.

Magazines for the discerning spammed author & reader

Have you ever had one of those days when no matter how hard you try, you just can’t think of anything pertinent to blog about? This was one of those days for me.

After a few hours of straining my brain for a topic I decided to check my email. And there, waiting in my inbox like some godsend from heaven above was my topic! Oh yeah, impertinent and irreverent as it was;  beckoning for me with wide open friendly language. An offer just for “working authors, like you Anya Howard” -cough, cough, oh sure-, and sent from some concerned thoughtful soul in Nevada. (I know it was Nevada because the HAVE YOUR NAME REMOVED FROM OUR MAILING LIST BY CLICKING HERE led to some site in Vegas. )  It was the generous first line of the email that tickled my Muse:

“Subscribe to ****Magazine NOW and win a chance for a vacation for two to Disney World!”

The fact that I have no interest in subscribing to this magazine about car maintenance and for the life of me can’t figure out what car maintenance has to do with writing, well that’s all rather superfluous. The important thing is that I got inspired! I got to thinking about magazines that don’t exist but should! Magazines for authors, magazines for book readers, magazines for which reason tells me there already exists a niche of readers who don’t have to be seduced by a chance to ride Space Mountain or meet Mickey Mouse in order to get them to the news stand. So heads up magazine publishers -here’s your chance to come up with something that might actually sell to the authors and readers you so joyfully spam. (Click on magazine covers for larger images!)

Now here’s one I’d read in a heartbeat -if I had time, anyway:

Here’s a magazine sure to appeal to the savvy & sexually snobbish in the reading underworld:

For the pro book snark tired of the same old, same old in bathroom lit:

One for authors who have been there and back again:

For those authors with the firm conviction that originality is way overrated, and a word used mainly by losers anyway:

And because I hate to see anyone overlooked, even those who have gone to a lot of effort of seeming vanishing off the face of the earth…

I’m signing off now, with much thanks to blah, blah magazine for it’s inspiration and with the aim of getting my head back into my novel :) Good night and good Musing everyone!

The lights are on…

Ordinarily, early in the month I have a new book out, I do promo posts encouraging folks to grab it off the shelves–but Things Are Different Now. LAW OF ATTRACTION got caught in that limbo of Dorchester releases…supposedly coming out in digital format now and in print format next summer. As it was to be the first of a really cool series, that saddens me. Already I have readers asking “What’s the hold-up? Why can’t I get your new book?” And I don’t have an answer.

But isn’t that a gorgeous cover? And didn’t my new website turn out beautifully, based on the coastal Oregon locale and the quirky/fascinating series characters?

I could whine about hopes and dreams once more doing a slow swirl around the porcelain bowl of publishing before finally going down–because this has happened to me more than once in my 20+ years as a novelist. But in keeping with that LAW OF ATTRACTION theme– “what goes around comes around” and you get back what you send out into the Universe–I will instead go with an attitude of gratitude here. Please feel free to chime in if things have taken an unexpected turn for the better in your writing life! And if you choose to commiserate, or to vent about your own circumstances, that’s OK, too. As for me and my house, well–we’ve been in lots worse situations, so we’re happy to be where we are!

First, I’m extremely grateful that when my editor, Alicia Condon, suddenly left Dorchester first of this year, to fill the gap Kate Duffy left at Kensington, she still loved my writing: LAW OF ATTRACTION came from one of those wonderful New York lunch conversations where she and I and my agent were euphoric about this series and its potential! Then we hit some snags and stalls…the poor book got orphaned while it was in the editorial phase, BUT THEN, I wrote a proposal for a new Amish series this summer and in a miraculously short time–10 days–Alicia bought it. The first book of that series is totally drafted now–and I’ve been paid for it!–so I’m in a good place! I love what I’m writing, I’ve enjoyed the challenge of taking on the entirely new mindset/culture of the Amish, and I still adore working with Alicia.

Along this same line, I’m so delighted that my agent, Evan Marshall, heard Alicia say she was looking for someone to write a new Amish series–and my name sprang to his lips! Good man, Evan: his positive attitude about moving forward, and about how to deal with this Dorchester situation, has helped me stay centered. I can whine to him about how much I paid for ads and bookmarks and a website revamp for this star-crossed book, and he listens–and then hears another editor at another house saying she’s looking for an author to write an Amish series, and again my name sprang forth!

Rather than jinx the situation, I will simply say that I’m really excited to be brainstorming with another long-esteemed editor at a different publishing house, and that if all goes as we hope, I’ll be going to contract for an open-ended Amish series that will be lighter while still honoring the beliefs and lifestyle of the Old Order Amish, and will feature a delightful maiden aunt anchor character.

Along this same subject line, I’m totally jazzed about an upcoming personal tour of homes, shops, etc. in Jamesport, Missouri–the largest settlement of Old Order Amish west of the Mississippi–in just a couple of weeks. This is the sort of on-site sensory experience I need to really ground these books in day-to-details and language cadence and other information you just can’t get from print research.

And now, I’m really happy that I’ve been able to look at my current situation in a brighter light. All the spiritual cues and astrology have pointed to a time when I have to clear out what I’ve done in the past to make room for new things in my future–we all do! As a part of this process, my alter ego/pseudonym got turned down on her last proposals so Melissa MacNeal will be on hiatus…except last week her Aprhodisia editor invited her to write an erotic novella for a 2011 Christmas anthology!

It all works out. Deep down, I always knew it would! Like E.L. Doctorow said, “Writing a novel is like driving a car at night. You can only see as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way.”

Same could be said for navigating a writing career. I don’t know what awaits me farther down the road, but I know I’m moving forward. Hope you’ve got your lights on and you’re making the trip, too!

Men Times Three

It’s Labor Day and to celebrate the day of rest from labor, I’m giving away 2 copies of MEN TIMES THREE – my upcoming release!

I’m very pleased to say that I’ve received my best rating ever from RT Book Reviews for MEN TIMES THREE. I confess to having had some concerns about this story.

Believe me, it’s not easy to twine six people into one story thread with rising tension, sexual tension, lots of hot sex and one couple teasing each other stupid by NOT having sex. What was I thinking coming up with such a crazy idea?

I was thinking how much I love a challenge. And that works really well until I get into the depths of the second draft and I need to move scenes around and keep the threads tightly intertwined.

But thanks to my editor’s faith, I managed to get to The End without my head exploding. And I’m so glad I did, because this is what RT had to say:

RT Rating 4.5 Stars

Available Sept 28/2010 ISBN: 978-0-7582-3827-6

There’s something about six-pack abs in a flannel shirt and tool belt that can make a woman’s mouth water; toss in a gorgeous face and the heart of a hero, and you’ve got the O’Banions. Mama did something right with those boys and readers will need asbestos gloves to flip through this funny, sexy romp. . .

Reviewed By: Pat Cooper

Here’s the back cover blurb:

Hot and hard-bodied . . . The O’Banion brothers have what women want. Need a man who can swing a hammer? They’re ready. Craving an incredibly sensual seduction? You got it, times three . . .

Big brother TJ is hammering up a storm building a woodsy retreat for Marnie Dawson, who’s thrilled to see that the hunky contractor is so devoted to his work…and to providing the ultimate in pleasure. Then there’s Deke, rock solid and crazy about he way leggy Holly Dawson looks in high heels. Please, Baby, please. Keep them on when everything else comes off. And when Eli and Kylie connect, they totally scorch the sheets. May the long, hot summer never end . . .

I have two copies of MEN TIMES THREE to give away to random commenters today. Please share a story or two about men you’ve noticed in toolbelts, hard hats or swinging an ax. (or a hammer or climbing a ladder or…fixing a roof … or . . .) ;-)

Oh come now…surely you’ve seen one or two that caught your eye!

Life’s sweet, enjoy it!

Gettin’ Tired of me yet?

Good morning, all…and yes, I’m a bit late getting this posted, but last night I just flat out ran out of steam. Not only did I spend two very long hours in the dentist’s chair yesterday (My first cavity in around thirty years!) I’ve been blogging all over hell and gone this week, promoting the release of not one but TWO books–HELLFIRE the second book in my DemonSlayers series, and Nocturnal, an anthology with a linked story in it that’s also part of the series, called CRYSTAL DREAMS.

I am also still promoting the release of WOLF TALES 10, which came out in July, and I have just finished writing the final story in the Wolf Tales series, WOLF TALES 12. Without giving away details, I can tell you that #12 will answer the questions you’ve had about the Chanku–where they came from, and what they’re like five years in the future, since that’s when the tale is set. I’m really happy with the way the story turned out and my beta readers seemed to approve, which is a GOOD thing, as I definitely trust their judgment.

I really love the cover for that book–but then I’ve been very lucky with all my WOLF TALES covers–here are the ones for 10 and 11, which comes out at the end of December:
I can’t wait to see what they do for the final book, though I know I’m going to have mixed feelings about that one’s release.

In the meantime, I am working on a proposal for a new series for Aphrodisia and hoping that my editor likes the idea. Not going to jinx myself right now so won’t talk about it yet, but you’ll definitely hear when I have something ready. Leave a comment, stop in and say hello, and you’ll have a chance to win Bumper! Bumper is my four-legged star in the DEMONSLAYERS–a pit bull/poodle cross, and she’s also going to be the heroine of the book I’m writing next: CRYSTALFIRE! (And no, I’m NOT tellin’!!!)

I’ll pick a couple of winners by Monday. And, in case you’re interested, this is Bumper:

As always, if you’re interested in excerpts for my books, you can find them on my website. DEMONSLAYERS and WOLF TALES link to the different sections–follow directions to the “regular” stories and the erotic ones. Enjoy!
