When People See Your Books

So I’ve been dating a new guy for a few a months now. (Okay, five months exactly as of tomorrow, but who’s counting?) I’ve codenamed him–as I codename all the people in my “real” life–the Professor Moriarty. Actually, he codenamed himself after Sherlock Holmes’s arch-nemesis, which I think is awesome, but I’m pretty fond of him regardless of his mad scientist/evil genius qualifications.

But that’s not the point of this post…well, I’m not entirely sure this post has a point, but there we go.

We were walking through this little town near my house after dinner, but before the movie were going to see. We passed a bookstore, and both of us being big readers, we went inside. They had a few of my books, so I took them up to the counter and asked if they wanted me to sign their stock. Of course, they said yes, and the sales clerk had apparently never met an author before because she blushed and gushed adorably. She chatted with me about her friend who wants to write romance, and I told her about Romance Divas, which has a forum that helped me hone my writing skills.

This advice giving caused more gushing about how nice I was and how she wanted me to sign one of the books to her so she could buy it herself. Color me tickled.

I’m walking out of the store with Prof. Moriarty, who’d watched the whole exchange, and he said, “That was so cool.”

He’s now a big fan of having me sign stock when we hit bookstores. He even keeps an eye out for my books in stores even when he’s not with me. I recently got a text message about how he’d seen my new book in a store by his work.

This book, for the record:

Primal Heat
Print Book: Amazon.com · Amazon · Barnes & Noble · Chapters.ca · Books-A-Million · IndieBound · Kensington · Borders · Powell’s Books
eBook: Amazon Kindle · B&N NOOKbook

Oh, and you can read an excerpt if you want to know more.

I have other friends and family who keep a look out for my books for me, which is nice because they’re all over the US and I get a good idea of nationwide distribution that way. Hey, some people have publicists. I have friends. My best friend, especially, is good about keeping an eye out and texting/emailing me pics from her cell phone. It’s awesome. I love those messages.

And…yeah, I knew this post wasn’t going to have a real point. Ah, well! Win some, lose some, confuse the heck out of others. It happens. Just roll with it.

Happy holidays to all!

Happy Almost Thanksgiving!

If you’re looking for your Thanksgiving Turkey, he might well be eating the grass seed on my front lawn. We have a regular crowd of the things pass by our house every morning, pecking at anything interesting and making the weirdest gobbling noise I have ever heard!

We don’t celebrate Thanksgiving in England so I wasn’t quite sure what to make of it when I moved to California, or quite sure whether we should be celebrating it or not. :) (4th of July is another one). But right from the start we were amazed at how families we’d just met insisted on us sharing their festivities and for us- being all alone in a strange land- it was very comforting. In some ways I’ve come to prefer Thanksgiving to Christmas as its all the love and sharing without the hassle of gift buying.

I have good news on the book front for those of you who enjoy my ‘Simply’ series. I’ve sold three more to Kensington, tentatively entitled Simply VII, VIII and IX.LOL I do know that the next one will be about Christian Delornay and that’s about all I can tell you, seeing as it won’t come out until February 2012.

The next book out for me is a Kensington Brava novella in the anthology, Lords of Passion with the legendary Virginia Henley and the lovely Maggie Robinson. My bit is called “How to seduce a wife” and it involves a reformed rake of a husband who is so determined to do the right thing by his new wife that he manages to bore her to tears in bed. How they sort out this tangle involves a visit to Madame Helene’s and some good advice from a very familiar character in the ‘Simply’ series.

Publisher’s Weekly said: “Readers will float away on the literary flair of these escapist tales, each touched with just the right amount of eroticism.”

I hope that you will all enjoy your Thanksgiving this year. How do you celebrate? Do you have any particular traditions or special dishes you make? I’m giving away a copy of Lords of Passion to one commenter. I’ll update the post with the winner on Sunday :)

p.s. also please keep Aphrodisia author Cassie Ryan in your prayers as she deals with unexpected surgery.

The Underfed Thanksgiving Readers Market

It’s November, which means Thanksgiving is just around the corner. While deleting my inbox of last month’s old messages I noticed some new Release announcements from various authors, and that several of these were for Halloween-oriented titles. Over the years I have noticed publishers, and especially epubs, offer a lot of seasonal titles come holiday times. Not just for Halloween but other holidays, too, though most especially for Easter, July 4th, Valentines Day and Christmas. Strangely, however, there’s not a whole lot of pickings come Thanksgiving. I’m not really sure why this is, but in a way it is kind of sad that this very important American holiday seems so overlooked by the publishing world.

And as I pondered on this, I concluded readers are being sadly neglected. Heck, there’s plenty to Romanticize about when it comes to Thanksgiving. And the creative author, put to the test, could come up with something very delectable to offer the holiday theme tastes of the hungry reader. Here’s are just few book ideas that came to mind (click on image for larger view):

This Romance comes with a sequel-

Whipping Her ‘Tater

For the man who appreciates the experienced Cougar:

And for the non-fiction lovers:

Even for readers of other types of fiction, the possibilities are there.

Horror is always popular, and what better plot idea than some frightful situation we all encountered at some time in our life?

Who doesn’t enjoy a cozy mystery on a chilly November night?

Murder thrillers can be especially appealing for some women:

Cookbooks are especially popular during the holidays. And this one is sure to find a welcoming audience among those looking for novel alternatives to the same-old-same-old boring turkey and dressing fare

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Finally! I’m baaaack and nominated for an award!

Last month on my regular blog day, I was mid-move and waiting desperately for my internet connection to go live. Horrors! Unfortunately it was also my release week for MEN TIMES THREE, my latest Aphrodisia!

The good thing is, I’m back, and an even better thing is I now have more really cool reviews and news to share!

Laurie from http://www.demonloversbooksandmore.com/ says:

href="http://www.aphrodisiaauthors.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/MEN_TIMES_THREE1.jpg">

Available Sept 28/2010 ISBN: 978-0-7582-3827-6

Bonnie Edwards has created an incredibly intricate novel that has 6 main characters, but the viewpoint shifts are smooth and the transition from each brother’s section flowed. I never once was annoyed with extraneous points of view, and Bonnie has quite the witty sense of humor. I find it hard to find witty banter in an erotica novel, and this one had it! It didn’t feel forced or out of place. In fact,I’d market this book as a contemporary romance as well as erotica since it was so well-developed.

Fresh Fiction says: MEN TIMES THREE is as hot as the desert sun with men promising to quench your thirst. I loved it!

For the first time ever, a book of mine has been nominated for an award. I don’t generally enter contests and I don’t have a clue who nominated MEN TIMES THREE but I’m SO STOKED to announce that my O’Banion brothers are listed at http://authorsafterdark.blogspot.com/ Voting will start end of November sometime, so please consider voting *if you’ve read the book*. Please consider reading the others in my category so you can give due consideration to your vote. That’s all I ask.

I am just so pumped that one of my books would be listed.

To celebrate, I’ll give away a copy of MEN TIMES THREE to one commenter…winner to be posted next Saturday November 13 so please check back!

Wolf Tales 11, and then one to go.

Just one more month until Wolf Tales 11 releases–this one is sort of different from my others in the series. It all started with the presidential election a couple of years ago, during the primaries when I saw Michelle Obama for the first time and had an absolute “holy shit” moment…she IS Keisha Rialto. Exactly as I have pictured Anton’s mate from the beginning–tall and strong and really a “kick ass” personality. Anyway, I filed that tidbit away in the back of my mind, and kept trying to figure out how I could somehow use the resemblance in a story. When i sat down to write WT11, I still wasn’t certain, and then it came to me.

What if the two San Francisco packmates who were pregnant–Tala and Lisa–were kidnapped in order to force the Chanku to assassinate the president? And what if the only way to save the women and protect the president and his wife was for Keisha to act as the First Lady’s double? And then, of course, what if things go terribly wrong, and there’s a chance Anton might be lost forever? Well, I wasn’t really planning on that, but you know how it is when Anton has a plan? Uh huh…this one doesn’t quite work the way he intends. I can promise you a really good story with this book, and a lot of fun as I mix a bit of politics (which we’re all absolutely SICK of at this point!) and a whole lot of sexy Chanku action to come up with a story that doesn’t go anywhere in the direction you expect it to go!

Here’s a brief little clip, and there’s a full first chapter on my website, but only if you’re 18 or over. And here’s an excerpt of the moment when Keisha dons her disguise for the president and first lady–Keisha has arrived in wolf form as has Nick Barden, who will be acting as a bodyguard for the REAL first lady:
~~~~~~~~~
Anton glanced at his watch. “We need to hurry. Keisha? Sweetheart, why don’t you go with the First Lady and get ready. I want your hair, make-up, everything the same.” He leaned over and unfastened her collar. She glanced at the president’s wife and winked, much to the lady’s obvious surprise. Then Keisha trotted in the direction of the bedroom.
Anton stayed in her head. Be gentle. She knows what to expect, but until you’ve actually seen someone shift…
Keisha’s soft laughter echoed in his mind, and they all heard the First Lady’s gasp of shock. Anton grinned. “It appears my wife just shifted.” He reached into the bag and grabbed a pair of sweat pants and a t-shirt. “Nick, why don’t you go ahead and shift. At least you can keep the president’s wife company while you wait here.”
AJ removed Nick’s collar, and the young man rose from four paws on the ground to two human feet.
Tall and slim, he still had a youthful build with broad, bony shoulders, dark olive skin and long, dark hair. His high cheekbones and dark coloring could have been Middle Eastern or Native American, but he was beautiful no matter what his race. He nodded his head in respect as he quickly dressed.
The president shook his head slowly, obviously bemused. “I know what you told me, but if I hadn’t seen that, I never would have believed it.” As soon as Nick slipped into his sweats, the president shook his hand. “I am trusting you with the safety of the most important woman in my life.”
“I’ll keep her safe. You have my promise.”
“Well? What do you think?”
Keisha—at least he thought it was his mate—stood in the open doorway wearing a dark teal blue gown. With heels, she stood almost as tall as the president, and with the subtle use of makeup and her long hair tucked up under the shorter wig, she no longer looked anything like herself.
Grinning broadly, the First Lady stepped up beside her. Instead of showcasing their differences, her proximity only made their similarities more profound. Other than her slightly lighter complexion, they could have been twins.
Anton checked his watch once again. “Ma’am. Meet Nick Barden. Nick will stay with you this evening. He’ll be in mental contact with me at all times and can keep you informed on what’s happening. His mate is involved in the rescue of our two kidnapped pack members, so he’s got a link to that action as well. He’ll shift into his wolf form if anyone comes to the room. This floor is supposed to be secure, but we really can’t know for certain. Don’t allow anyone in. Remember, you’re not supposed to be here. Don’t answer the door unless it’s one of us—Nick will know since we can all communicate telepathically.”
The president kissed his wife, a long, slow kiss that reminded all of them how serious the night had just become. Then he held his arm out to Keisha. She wrapped her fingers around his arm, and with all the grace of a queen—or the wife of a president—allowed him to escort her from the room.
Anton glanced back in time to see the First Lady fold her hands as if in prayer. Nick stood beside her, but she seemed totally unaware of his presence. Her eyes were on her husband as he stepped swiftly out of the room. Then her glance flashed to Anton.
Once again he dipped his head in respect. “We’ll keep him safe. I promise. Nick will watch over you. If you have any questions, ask him.” He shrugged. “Very few know of our existence, but I’m sure Nick can answer whatever concerns you have. It might help you pass the time a bit faster.”
“Thank you.”
Her surprisingly calm smile was the last thing he saw as he quietly shut the door and followed the others to the waiting elevator.
Wolf Tales 11 will release around Christmas time–the actual date is December 28, but the books usually show up a week or so early. Wolf Tales 12, the final book in the series, will be out in July. It takes place five years after WT11, and with any luck will answer all your questions about the Chanku. I’m still hoping to do a second generation series–ya never know!
HellFire and Nocturnal are still on the shelves if you haven’t read them yet–Crystal Dreams, my story in Nocturnal, has been nominated for a BOOKIE award, as has the entire anthology. I also found out this week that I’m up for a Lifetime Achievement Award from Romantic Times Book Reviews magazine, which is pretty cool. I’ll be choosing a winner from among those leaving a comment, so if you want a chance to win a book or a stuffed “Bumper” dog, leave a note, and thanks for coming by!
